Buyers Guide

Buying a diamond isn't the kind of purchase you make every day so we feel it is necessary to provide you with all the information you need to help you make the right choice.

In order to make this choice it is important that you understand the 4C's:

A good cut is recognised by its light-handling qualities. Only at the hands of a master cutter is the true beauty of a diamond unleashed. The art of cutting diamonds has been so refined that a precise mathematical formula has been developed. Diamonds are now usually cut with 58 facets that are placed at precise angles to each other. Diamonds can also be cut into a varity of different shapes which include brilliant, pear, emerald etc.

Totally colourless diamonds are very rare and represent the highest colour grade. Strongly bright coloured diamonds are occasionally recovered. These red, green, blue and amber coloured diamonds are collector's items and fetch commensurate prices.

The degree to which a diamond is free of interior or exterior blemishes and inclusions. The size and position of inclusions affect the value of a stone according to whether or not they interfere with the passage of light through the diamond. If a diamond is without inclusions under 10 power magnification it is termed Loupe Clean which is the highest clarity grade.

As with all precious stones, the weight and the size of a diamond is expressed in carats. Diamonds were traditionally weighed against the seeds of the carob tree until the system was standardized and one carat was fixed at 200 milligrams. One carat is divided into 100 points, so that a diamond of 150 points weighs 1.5 carats.
